Welcome

The department was established as an independent academic unit relatively recently - in January 2006 and is still developing. Yet, it comprises a number of renowned faculty along with a group of young researchers and lecturers with yet-to-be-completed doctorates.
In our research we study a diverse set of topics, most of which fall within the realm of broadly defined social demography: social inequality and mobility, exclusion and segregation, education, family and kinship, life-course, health and medicine, gender and ageing. The other topics represented in the department include sociological study of the media and media effects, culture, groups, professions and organizations, public opinion as well as modern sociological theory and historical sociology.
We are committed to methodological diversity - ethnographers and quantitative researchers form a friendly, supportive community, in which good, innovative research is recognized and highly praised regardless of its epistemological underpinnings, methodological focus, or theoretical foundations. We strive to educate our students in the same spirit.
